Her ex-boyfriend beat on her. The new guy might literally eat her. Boy can Lily pick them.

After fleeing her abusive boyfriend, Lily tries to salvage what’s left of a life she has always dreamed of. That’s when she meets Nathan. By appearance, he is the perfect man to save her; however, what she doesn’t know about him might literally kill her.

Nathan is no ordinary being, but rather a beast from a barbaric and tragic past that has unfolded throughout time. Set against modern day Chicago, these two are about to have their violent worlds collide. Vendettas are set in motion, and relationships are put to the test. If true love can conquer all, Lily and Nathan must confront the monsters in their lives.

The new fantasy novel from J.h. Coates provides a slew of Kill Bill-like characters; and, deals out as much action, sex, comedy, and suspense, as any True Blood episode might. The multiple plot lines all converge to a Shakespearean-style climax, setting up multiple chapters in the series.

The first time I read this book I did not like it. This book has been revised and I have to say I like this one a lot better. I think I would call this a horror story because there are quite a few truly horrifying scenes that just makes you cringe. The monster characters in here are pretty violent, angry, and at times lovable. At least when it comes to Nathan. The way the five members of the Caesar family interact is interesting to say the least. Then there’s the interaction between Lily, her lovable but vulgar friend Todd, his mellow partner Martin, and her friend Jeanette. Let's just say that with Todd and his crazy antics, no day is ever boring for these four. I think the part of the book that really caught my attention was the interesting tidbit about Nathan’s lineage. It is going to be interesting to see where the story goes from here.

The book starts with Lily waking up one day in excruciating pain, and finally taking a good look at herself in the mirror. The image looking back at her is someone she never wants to see again, helping her find the courage to finally leave her abusive relationship with Rick. Fast forward some months later, and she still struggles with the crippling fear her ex-boyfriend’s name gives her. Since she left her old apartment she has been living with her bosses Todd & Martin, who are always there for her no matter what. Todd thinks it is high time that Lily should date, especially when Nathan, the hot new neighbor arrives. When Lily finally meets Nathan, she has to agree. He makes her feel safe, extremely shy, but more than ready to start a new relationship.

Just when she thinks she is finally free of Rick, he appears again bringing more pain, and suffering to her and her friends. Rick is not the only thing that is concerning Lily and her friends now, though. People are dying around the city. Each found with their heart missing, and no suspects yet in sight. Unbeknownst to them, Monsters around the world are converging to Chicago on the hunt for Nathan, leaving bodies behind. How would Lily feel when she finds out that Nathan is also a monster who sprouts claws, and fangs? Who also happens to eat hearts…...

But for some strange reason I actually liked this book, it actually kind of annoys me that I liked it. Perhaps it's b/c I really liked the hero, and somewhat cared for the heroine and loved her friends. Perhaps the next book will give more insight into why the included the hero's family like the author did, perhaps it's to give us a bit of background, but I'm thinking there's a better way to have done this. I couldn't put the book down, perhaps it's b/c I would like to see where the author is going to take us all on this bit of fantasy trip we're on, but I know one thing I'd like to know... What the heck is with all of the darn tea???
Thankfully NOT another vampire or zombie book. Instead this novel is rich with mafia-esque beasts...let's call them monsters. They have existed for centuries. Fighting for control, falling in love with the wrong sorts, etc.
Flash forward to the present day of Chicago. We begin a story of Lily, our damsel in distress. She has beaten by her boyfriend...again...and this time it's the last straw! She's out! But will she ever meet someone that will love her and be good to her?
Enter Nathan...a man who is not quite what he seems. You guessed it...he's the aforementioned 'Monster'.
When these two cross paths a 'Beauty and The Beast' relationship unfolds. As well as monsters hunting down Nathan, monsters looking to stir up a feudal war, and monsters with big sexual appetites. All of this and more are thrown at Lily and Nathan as they begin their search for true love.

This is funny, action packed, and well paced. And that's not all...it's only the first book of the series. Can't wait for part 2
Much of the description of supernatural characters had me thinking "vampires" but they are not. A young, abused lady is trying to escape her abusive boyfriend and finds both shelter and employment with a gay couple. A powerful supernatural comes to town to open a bookstore, seeing her he falls in love but must be carefully not to hurt her. It isn't long before he is forced to save his new friends and that leads me to the part of the book where he acts totally out of character, killing an injured woman he finds bleeding in an alley. Perhaps the second book will explain this and why so many evil types are running wild, some trying to find him while others are seemingly just on a killing spree.
*I re-read a newly edited version of this book. It is been massively edited and is a much smoother read now so you can enjoy the story and not get hung up on the poor editing.

This definitely ends in a cliff-hanger. But the story is good. I love the interactions between Nathan and Lily. It is nice to read about a male who isn't a jerk (maybe a monster, but a nice one) and was endearingly shy with the girl he likes.

Nathan's family is full of crazy other monsters who interact in a clearly loving but fairly violent manner. Sort of like my older brother, loving but protective. And they are hysterical.
Lily works at a coffee shop named sips, where she is the queen of making tea. Turns out monsters love tea. Lily's bosses/roommates are hysterical and its nice to see how they all interact and play off each other.

The story starts with Lily recovering from a beating by her boyfriend. Its nice to see the play of a human ex, vs a monster and the question of what really makes a monster.

In addition to the Lily/Nathan romance there is an entire other story building up to a huge monster show down. While the two stories intertwine it definitely seems like this book was more about building up the relationship and starting the monster war in motion, but I am hoping the next book is a little more explanatory about the monster politics and power play going on.
